STAND OUT RIOT: SPICY INSPIRING SKA

This is Ska music taken to its upper limits of imagination. Stand Out Riot performs a very unique genre of Ska incorporating a very different variety of instruments into one core combined musicality.
Formed in 2004 in the English city of Manchester, Stand Out Riot have developed from their very beginning a unique wave of Ska which brings them such wide popularity. Born in the very centre of Manchester Punk Scene, the band is known for tremendous energy and excitement all linked with a wide variety of musical instruments. Contemplating Francis on the vocal and trombone, Will at the Bass and Keys, Hannah playing Sax, Ste the guitarist, Tessa the Violin, Charlotte another Sax and Ben the drummer, they surely know how to drive a crowd into delight.
With a debut album in 2009, Carnival Militia, they brought their attention to themselves developing their very own popularity. In 2011 that popularity has grown even further with the released of their second album, The Gentleman Bandits.
With the Manchester scene bringing ever so much more and better Ska bands influenced by their peculiar hardcore punk scene which is becoming a part of the City social and cultural history, we can only expect better influences for these guys and hope to see them much often.

THE LIQUIDATOR: SKA AT THE HEART OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL

If you have ever seen a football match live in some of the most famous English football grounds you have surely come to listen to this song, The Liquidator.
The song is originaly a popular rocksteady instrumental track that was released by Jamaicans Harry J. Allstars back in 1969. The band was composed of Aston Barrett, aka Family Man, on the bass, drummer Carlton Barrett, and Alva Lewis’ guitar. They later included Winston Wright at the organ. The core members were later related to the foundation of the super famous Jamaican band, The Wailers.
Back in the 70’s, England was becoming aware of a sudden popularity of the Ska tunes and music especially after the creation of the Madness. This song came to popular knowledge when it started to be played at some of the most famous English football grounds, such as Chelsea’s home ground Stamford Bridge, Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion, Northampton Town and even a few more.
Although the tunes played at football grounds are slightly mixed and include clapping and shouting the club’s name, here is presented the original 1969 version that came straight out of the birth ground of Ska music, Jamaica Island.

NO DOUBT: VINTAGE REVIVAL

Here are a gents and lass that need not presentation. Dear readers here I give you: NO DOUBT!
No doubt were a North American band famous for several singles most related to the Rock Music developing scene. However, some of their experimental stuff can also be label Ska, as you can hear in the video above. This band is responsible for the revival of the Ska music in the early 90’s especially in USA.
Since 1987 the band has released 6 studio albums and currently working on a 6th one to be released during this year. However in 1996, Tragic Kingdom, the band’s third album was their peak in musical acclamation. A sort of experimental rock steady beat influenced greatly by the Jamaican ska rhythm and a touch of brilliant alternative rock musicality, has produced what was recently considered one of the 100th best albums of the century. Including track such as Don’t Speak, Just a Girl and Spiderwebs, this album has surely paved the way for the years to come in the Ska musical genre.
Such was the acclamation to this work that it could not pass unnoticed for this Punkzine the brilliant effort done by NO DOUBT. There must be a great number of Ska/Punk bands that can claim their influences this art work and we cannot be more delighted with such recognition.

Check out the bands website for news as they are on the verge of releasing a new record: http://www.nodoubt.com/

SCRUTINYZING INTOXICATION PRACTICE

Being Punk often enhances the state of self liberation and social freedom from all sorts of imposed behaviors or acts. This is exactly one of the cases that I wish to essay here today. Have you ever thought about how exposed are we to manipulation and conning from all different environments and means? A form of controlling which can best be described as Intoxication on all social and cultural levels.
The Intoxication term is frequently associated with alcohol ingestion or drug abuse. In both cases it leads to addiction manipulation, corporate and marketing conning. One is often defraud by the problem free liberation condition which leads to an addiction state where he can be controlled in favor of the profitable ones. Romans used to drunken their prisoners so to obtain information from them, hence the expression in vino veritas. What was an ancient mean of torture is now used for trading and profiting purposes. The same happens with tobacco. All these substances are produced to maintain you vividly addicted so you can be exploited in terms of consumerism.
All of us think about Intoxication as alcohol or drug ingestion. That is often case but not the full extent of it. TV can also Intoxicate as it is produced in a way to obtain your maximum attention so to feed your mind with useless adverts in hope of some profitable relation. The subconscious TV manipulative tricks are as subtle as they are effective.
Hidden in their penthouses headquarters, corporate chiefs count their endless dollars obtained by intoxication slavery, manipulating people’s mind to a state of anguish where intoxication is the only escape, becoming a hateful being to hate himself more than the corporate killers who had put him in such state. I like to think that such greedy individuals often have to take their drink to be able to sleep at night just on the thought that if millions would rebel and stop coming back for more their wealth will soon be put to a beautiful culmination.
Frederick Douglass once wrote: “When a slave was drunk, the slaveholder had no fear that he would plan an insurrection; no fear that he would escape to the North. It was the sober, thinking slave who was dangerous, and needed the vigilance of his master to keep him slave.”
Stay eyed opened and sharp for these intoxications that are in our daily life. Pay attention and you will see it a lot more often that you had expected.

PUNK TEXT by Primitive Reason

A vida sobrepor-se-á à contenda.

THE SKINTS: ANTI-OPRESSIVE SKA ETHOS

A British Ska/Reggae/Roots band that is brought before your ears to your delight. Take a moment to appreciate the beautiful fusion of tones presented by The Skints.
Sending musical acute messages to the social and cultural behaviors that oppress and manipulate people’s mentality and attitudes, The Skints have surely cut through many speech barriers thus affirming their position in terms of personality. Their direct lyrics combined with the steady Roots beat with a few original spicy Ska riffs makes their sonority truly joyful.
Formed in 2005 in the British city of London, they have already put out a wide number of live performances in combination to some great Ska legends such as: The Aggrolites, Voodoo Glow Skulls or even Reel Big Fish to name a few. With experience in many great festivals in the genre, they can put up a really good live rock show.
Under the widely known label, Do The Dog (which also edits a Skazine, Link below), and later labeled Record Alliance (Sonic Boom Six’s own Recording), The Skints have released their fabulous first album called Live. Breathe. Build. Believe. It contains several fantastic songs such as Ya Know, Bright Girl and Murderer among many others. In April 2011 the band engaged on an online pledge for funds to be risen on the sake of their next album to be released later this year. The pledge was widely acclaimed with a huge accession which is clearly a good indicative for the upcoming work.
We will surely be expecting great stuff from this guys and I think that they are more than capable of achieving.

SONIC BOOM SIX: JUMP-UP SKA SOUNDCLASH

"Sharp of mind and socially-conscious, there's nothing about Sonic Boom Six that doesn't come from the heart. Their shiny punk reggae hip-hop sound addresses real issues with a more productive vibe than these riot-strewn streets have seen recently, and tonight, they're on fire.", this was Steve Beebee’s description in Kerrang! Magazine about this superb Ska-Punk british band. Born in the hearth of Manchester City, UK, SB6 have carved their way up in the Ska and Punk world with brilliant achievements so far.
Mixing different musical styles, such as Punk, Ska, Hip-Hop and Reggae, and all blended perfectly with a spectacular band energy and sound deepness that can take the listener into upper levels of enjoyment. The band’s lyrics carry a sharp social message with roots in the culture revolutionary movements and the clash activism which produces brilliant messages expressed with their brilliant soundtracks.
The band is formed by Laila K, vocal energy, Barney Room, bass sound deepness and rap lyrical messages, The Blade, Ska skanking trombone and guitar, Madfish, Punkly dynamic drums, and Jimmy T boom, reggae roots rhythm guitar. Edited by their own label, Rebel Alliance, SB6 have produced 3 full length albums since 2006. The first musical artcraft was named Ruff Guide to Gender Terrorism. In 2007 they have released Arcade Perfect, an album that took them into great projection upon the Ska world touring with some big names such as Streetlight Manifesto and Reel Big Fish. Lastly but by no means least SB6 released City of Thieves, a highly acclaimed piece of musical production which led them to a recent Ska stardom.
The recent singles activity at SB6 home page has put pen to paper in predicting a new record. Should a new album is released it is surely worth checking it out. Be sharp eyed for this guys.

ANARCHY EVOLUTION: FAITH, SCIENCE AND BAD RELIGION

Here is to be presented one of the best modern Punk books written. An essay about the development of a social culture in the mid 80’s with scientific evidence of species evolutionary anarchy and all connected with the necessity of belief or religion.
Greg Graffin, the author, is best known for leading one of the best punk bands ever, Bad Religion, and few know about his relation with Cornell University where he got a PhD in Zoology and is a professor of Life Science and Paleontology. Starting by defying authority on his early years, Greg started to develop a line of thought where he was made the owner of his own behavior. He could challenge a culture or idea just because it didn’t had an unbreakable and undisputable law, which led him to initiate an evolution on that specific ideology. This could challenge almost all the worlds’ ideologies. However, he always did so in the interest of advancement and not just purely nihilism.
This concept of bringing the thought freely upon ones belief, idea or social behavior brought many advances in human evolution. Greg showed that this evolution is supported by naturalistic facts, scientific evidence of species evolution, which could corroborate the concept of evolution by thinking freely. He even got one step further, just by demonstrating that in all species, no exception, this evolution is beneficial and anarchic in all ways, and it cannot be guided and obliged to bend towards any direction. This comes in the same line of Charles Darwin work about Evolution of Species, where he postulated about the human evolution based on the species he studied. He mentioned that where there is learning, there is more to it, because learning has no boundaries.
This boat rocking piece of literature ends in the discussion about the human belief in a superior being, religion. Greg is of thought that it is dangerous for human beings to believe so intensely on any superior being as it can blur their vision on the global development and differentiate people from the general good. There is no destiny or design, there is just life and death and the human goal should be to try living rather than figure out the holistic plan the Creator has stored for us. Human beings, prepare for the 21st century.
